Kashmiri (कॉशुर, کٲشُر ) is a Dardic language, a part of the Indo-European Language Family, spoken primarily in the Kashmir Valley of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. There are approximately 5.5 million speakers in India and approximately 105,000 speakers in Pakistan. Kashmiri is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.
Kashmiri literature dates back to over 750 years, this is, more-or-less, the age of many a modern literature including English. Kashmiri was traditionally written in the Sharada script after the 8th Century A.D. This script is now used only in religious ceremonies of Kashmiri Pandits.
Kashmiri is now written in a slighly modified Perso-Arabic and Devanagari scripts. Among languages written in the Perso-Arabic script, Kashmiri is one of the very few that indicate all vowel sounds. This script has been used since the Muslim rule in India. Today, Kashmiri Muslims use the Perso-Arabic script and Kashmiri Hindus use the Devanagari script.
